Telluride Film Festival 2022 Reviews

This year was a light year for films. Maybe it was the backlog of Covid. Two years after what would have been prime shoot dates in 2020 and 2021 left the art film cupboard kinda bare. But we still saw a few goodies. And as always, I had the best time ever with my TFF BFFs.

I saw 16 films + 1 concert at this year’s Telluride Film Festival.

My favorite film of the 2022 Telluride Film Festival: The Wonder, now streaming on Netflix. I’m not sure how this film will be marketed. Maybe you don’t think this film is for you… but I hope lots more people watch it. And unfortunately, it won’t have a theater run… and this is a tough one to watch at home. But it’s SLOW. But the pace is quite deliberate. Every choice Sebastián Lelio who directed The Wonder makes is intentional. The film is a layered story about science vs. religion, women vs. men, children vs. adults, freedom vs. captivity… but mostly it’s about truth vs. lies. And what we believe to be true being Truth. So. Yes, kinda timely. It’s excellent. I hope the Academy recognizes this (little) powerhouse film.

Here are the rest of my TFF reviews:

Aftersun

Produced by Telluride’s most beloved director, Barry Jenkins, is about a girl and her dad. It’s a simple story without a lot of high drama or fireworks. It reminded me a lot of spending time with my dad when I was a kid. His battles with alcoholism and daily life struggles (that were always intended to be kept private), but eventually come out anyway.

Armageddon Time

This is the kind of film that really bothers me. Who gave James Gray the budget for this film? Ugh. This autobiographical film is self-indulgent and boring. Why is this story even important? A little boy learning about racism… so? How does a film like this get green-lit? It’s not *the worst film* I’ve ever seen (mostly because I haven’t seen many films with superheroes)… but… not worthy of a coveted spotlight at the Telluride Film Festival.

Bobi Wine in Concert

Bobi Wine was in Telluride to promote his campaign for president of Uganda. Coined ‘Ghetto President’, Bobi was full of joy and messages of freedom. I do like a concert in Town Park. Oh, you magical Telluride.

Watch concert here.

Broker

This is a black comedy. Heavy on black, light on comedy. Within the first three minutes, it was clear that this was a tough story. But like a guy being shot out of a cannon… I was captivated. I WAS IN IT. And really… that’s kinda the point of a movie. I was taken on a journey! Broker (Korean: 브로커) is a South Korean film directed and written by Hirokazu Kore-eda starring Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won & Bae Doona.

Cate Blanchett Tribute

Cate Blanchett is delightful. It was really fun to see the clips TFF selected to showcase her unique career.

The End of the World

I didn’t know much about Bennington College before seeing this film. The documentary focuses on the amazing authors (Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote Less Than Zero and American Psycho, Donna Tartt, who wrote The Goldfinch) who came through Bennington College in the 1980’s. The place was really special and somehow figured out how to create an environment conducive to creativity. The film was like one long MTV commercial and I loved every minute of it.

I couldn’t find a trailer or where it might be streaming…

Godland

Do you like Danish films from the 1800s about Jesus-peddling priests who wander across barren Iceland? Well! You’re in luck! Godland is the film for you. Another beautiful, long, quiet film. I think there’s about 300 words in this entire feature-length film. This is the Mt. Everest of streaming. Don’t even try it if you like explosions in films. This film isn’t for you.

>>>>> Spoiler alert: There Will Be Blood ending <<<<<

Icarus, The Aftermath

The follow-up to the shocking documentary, Icarus about doping in Russia. This deadly cat & mouse is playing out in real time. Putin is still chasing the Russian doctor who was the mastermind of the doping program for the Olympics. I hope we don’t find this Russian doctor dead from suspicious activity like opening an envelope. He’s given up a lot to tell the truth. I’m a fan.

I couldn’t find a trailer or where it might be streaming…

Living

Bill Nighy is delightful and performances like this one in Living help us to forget about the caricature rockstar he played in Love Actually – which is the movie most Americans know him from. This is another quiet story about a proper Englishman who does his duty but leaves very little room in his life for joy and spontaneity. I can’t even imagine a life like that.

The Méliès American Negatives: World Premiere 3-D

Weird 3-D glasses! Obscure silent film clips! Serge est un homme français! Oooh la la! Tellement amusant! I’m a big fan of Serge Bromberg. We’ve missed Serge the last few years. He is a true showman! Serge plays the piano under all the clips of silent films he shows. It’s always a good time. Sadly, Serge is in trouble and I am hopeful for the best possible outcome for him.

One Fine Morning

This is the quintessential French film. Some people might say “Nothing happens.” But actually, a lot happens, but it’s a quiet story. More of a Day in the Life of Sandra, played by the beautiful and talented Léa Seydoux who is torn between her aging father, her vibrant daughter and her married man lover (oh, so french.)  This is a film that quietly unfolds with no major conclusions, which is just like real life. C’est parfait.

“Sr”

Who doesn’t love Robert Downey Jr? Well, guess what? He’s a chip off the ole block. There’s a Robert Downey Sr! Who knew? His dad also made fun, weird, inventive movies but unlike most filmmakers, he didn’t do it for BIG money, but as an artist who truly loved movies. Robert Jr. and Sr. are both charming men who are just fun to hang out with for a couple hours. See this documentary, then call your dad.

TÁR

Just give Cate Blanchett the Oscar now.

Wildcat

I gave this documentary an A+. I don’t hand out these A pluses easily, but this is basically a 2-hour cat video and at the end I cried and cried and cried. So yeah, it’s a really good film. And technically, this is a super difficult story to tell. Mostly because Harry, a British war vet suffering from PTSD shoots almost the entire film on his phone because he’s alone in the middle of the Peruvian jungle. He spends months caring for an orphaned baby ocelot. This story is about the attempt to save something (or someone) that (who) can not be saved. It’s about losing thousands of acres of Amazon jungle every day because the natural world is endangered. It’s about people who fight anyway even though everyone tells them that “it’s a lost cause”. It’s about doing the hard stuff even though, deep down, you will lose anyway, but stacking sandbags when the river of progress will eventually clear everything in its path…  is still worthwhile.

To be released December 30, 2022. Produced by Amazon so it should be available for a while.

Women Talking

The first review I heard of this film was “Women Talking, Men Snoring” so I didn’t rush to see it. And I get it… this film is *very slow*. But one interesting trend emerged – when I asked women if they had seen ‘Women Talking’, almost *every woman* I asked, LOVED IT. Raved about it. Said they were deeply affected by it. Sobbed. And almost every man gave a nearly 180° opinion. Men hated this film. Including the first review which was by a man. So. This film is divisive. Extremely. I loved it (see? I AM a girl!). And I cried for myself and so my many friends and women who have been violated but didn’t have a tight community of women friends to lean on for support.

This film really stuck with me. It feels very current. A reflection of 2022 “Me, too” conversations because even though Harvey Weinstein is in jail, there are still many more Harveys who walk free. It’s not a film that I’ll see over and over – the way I might watch Wildcat or The Wonder again… because it’s brutal. It’s hard to watch, but it’s important. Historic.

Sarah Polley who wrote Women Talking and directed Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormant, and Rooney Mara – and many other actors.

The Wonder

What else can I say? This film is crazy good. I love it because the story is happening on so many levels. Watch the film then come back and read this. Ok? Really. SPOILER ALERT: The scene with the men seated at the table and “Lib” is making her case  (I mean… so spot on… right?) Lib is the wild woman who is willing to risk jail after “breaking the law” but doing what is right. And the men who are deciding the fate of the young girl is, well, a bit like the supreme court. Lib is fighting for her, and the men are all too happy to let her die for their own glory. The story is not about what it’s about. It’s about today. It’s about women deciding their own fate and reinventing themselves. The film is about what we believe. It’s about what’s fabricated and what’s real. And ultimately what we believe.

Mean Girls & The Great Resignation

Employee Appreciation Day is March 4, 2022.

Get it? It’s March 4th… “March Fourth”.

As in… to march fourth / forward. Employees are marching fourth. And they aren’t looking back. The Great Resignation continues to be a threat to businesses and bottom lines everywhere because employers don’t know what to do to attract and retain top talent.

How do employers stop the bleeding?

I’m in the job market now. And I gotta tell you… it’s a wild ride. On one hand, I read article after article in the WSJ and the NYT, and quotes from leaders who are desperate. “Where are the workers?” “How can I compete?” – say business owners, CEOS and COOs.

Well, I want to tell you that the great workers are out there. Here I am. Ready to work. For the past few months, I’ve been attempting to run the gauntlet of your truly awful hiring process. And even more ironic, most of the companies I’m meeting with, are actually in the Talent Acquisition business. No, these aren’t transportation companies, or biochemistry labs… these companies core services (and position themselves as experts) are all about Talent Acquisition and Talent Management. Talk about the cobbler’s children having no shoes.

Attention Fortune 500 companies (you can skip this paragraph if you’re a small/medium business/SMB)! Seriously, how did you get so successful? You are so slow! Talent doesn’t wait. Panel interviews with 5-8 members of the team that take 2-4 weeks to schedule. The hiring process can take 10-12 weeks. This is how SMB is beating you and winning top talent. Intuitively, you know this. You approve budgets for expensive AI tools that your HR leaders demand but your hiring process is still awful. CEOs / COOs, I hear you boo-hooing in business podcasts talking about “what keeps you up at night”. You talk about attracting and retaining great talent… want to know why you can’t find great people? Your hiring process sucks. Despite how much people are complaining about how their businesses aren’t growing because they need to hire people, so… what are you actually doing to fix the problem?

Your journey starts with a single step… you need to decide who you are and what you stand for. Sounds simple enough, right? Because if you are a good company and you listen to your team (really listen), then you are way ahead of the pack. You already did the really hard part. You built a great company. But you aren’t leveraging your great company well because nobody outside your walls knows your story. That’s marketing. Not consumer marketing. Talent Marketing. So stop hiring more salespeople (if you can even find any or afford them) and start building a Talent Brand.

Here’s how to start.

3 (Real Talk) Strategies To Become an Employer of Choice

  1. First… and if you only do one thing: Invest in a Talent Brand
    • Now more than ever, talent needs to understand who you are (so your best candidates have a reason to stick around). The simple reason candidates are not applying for your jobs is because you still haven’t told them WHY TO APPLY. That one-pager with high level info about your health insurance and 401(k) isn’t going to cut it. You know why? Because that’s what everyone does. Candidates demand real information. What actually makes you unique as an employer? Start thinking of candidates as window-shoppers. Supply your consumers with all the reasons why they should invest 2, 4, 6, 10+ hours of their valuable time in an attempt to join your company. They will stop window-shopping and buy your jobs.
  2. Sell your opportunities
    • With very rare exception, employers are no longer in the driver’s seat. So why are recruiters behaving like bouncers? There are some standout superstars. The best recruiters I have spoken with (I’m looking at you, Patty Fortune) engage and invite people in. Ask your HR leaders about where there are stumbling blocks.
      • Hire salespeople and cross-train them as recruiters (see #3) because salespeople understand how to listen and provide a hot prospect with a reason to stay engaged. Some recruiters act like ‘mean girls’. And I’m not just talking about the women. Men, too. Looking for a job is tough. The really good recruiters understand and empathize with candidates. The great recruiters understand how to sell the opportunity.
      • Read your job descriptions. Are they sexy? Are they fun and engaging? Or do they read like the back of a vitamin supplement bottle with 27 bullet points. When was the last time your HR leadership overhauled your job descriptions? Every time someone starts a new role, they should be adding to the job description so it’s accurate. Good job descriptions are more than bulleted lists. They should reflect who you are.
  3. Take a chance on me
    • We have an enormous problem. There aren’t enough people to do the jobs we have. Think about that. Really let it sink in. And this labor shortage isn’t just because of a worldwide pandemic. No. In fact, this tight talent market was only exacerbated by Covid. The harsh business conditions we feel today were predicted in 2010. And lots of companies invested then in better HR processes. While it’s true that you can’t control the world’s talent market, you can control the everyday hiring practices in your organization. Encourage your recruiters and hiring managers to meet with candidates who don’t have all 20 out of 20 bullet points from a job description. We’ve all become too dependant on AI and it’s taken over hiring. We need to put the “human” back into Human Resources. You know this intuitively: the best candidates have that “Je ne sais quoi”. Uncovering their unique talents will require a bit of digging.
      • Make the ‘phone screen’ stage matter. Take 20 minutes and really learn about a person because most of the phone screens I’ve been on a total waste of my time and more importantly to you, the thousands upon thousands of hours your company invests for your recruiters to do them.

A final note

Do not ever, ever tell a candidate “This place prints money”. Yes. This really happened to me while speaking with a Fortune 500 company. The hiring manager who recently had joined a major insurance company, located in Milwaukee, WI told me “this place prints money”. Can you imagine anything less motivating to hear during an interview? Basically, his clear message to future employees: “it doesn’t matter what your contribution will be because this company will be successful no matter what“. And you know what? There are some greed-driven and unimaginative candidates who will accept his invitation to sit back and collect a paycheck. And someday, sooner than later, that business will close its doors like every other arrogant company that has when it falls under the weight of its own hubris.

The time to act is now. Companies that are investing in smart and daring leaders are reaping the rewards and future-proofing their companies. They are hiring leaders who behave like humans — with humility and grace. Great talent is searching for you. Help them to find you by 1) investing today in a better employment brand strategy, 2) showing your deep understanding that people are your best asset and, 3) stop following your job descriptions like they are gospel.

7 steps to avoid a terrible, miserable life.

“Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life!”

So.  What if your alarm goes off and you hit snooze?  And then you hit snooze again.  And then after calculating exactly how many vacation days you have left, and a bit of negotiation about how much trouble you’d be in if you called in sick, you start that familiar conversation of psyching yourself up for the day ahead, grab an energy drink and begin your commute.  It’s not even Monday.  It’s Thursday.  Where is your ‘school spirit’?  Have you fallen out of love with your employer already?

I know how you feel.  I’ve been there.

Here are the 7 steps to finding your next good job.

1. Shock & Denial – I can’t believe I accepted this bad job.  I wasn’t my fault.  I didn’t know.

2. Pain & Guilt – I have a terrible stomach ache and I feel guilty that I can’t just suck it up and make this bad job work anymore.

3. Anger & Bargaining – Dang.  I messed up.  I’m so effen stupid.  But maybe if I suck it up and make it work, then people will admire me and I’ll have a good stable work history!?

4.  Depression & Loneliness – No.  No.  No.  I can’t suck it up anymore.  And what’s worse is, I’ll never find a good job.  Some people are lucky enough to find cool jobs, just not me.  I will work at sucky job all of my life and someday, I’ll die.

5. Upward Turn – But hey…  What if I could find a job where I like going to work every day?  I feel better just imagining that there is a better place.  I believe in the possibility of finding a job I love!

6.  Reconstruction & Working Through – There are a few resources out there to help me to find a job that I really want…  http://www.thegoodjobs.com looks like a cool site (launching soon!) that provides relevant information that connects me to THE job, instead of just ANY job…

7. Acceptance – THIS is my offer letter!?  From this awesome company with an amazing culture that matches me and my desire for life/work balance!?  Yes! I accept!

Failure is a four letter word

Ok, I’ve stopped hitting the snooze alarm.  I’m up.  Here it is!  A brand new year.  Take a breath.  Love the crisp, fresh feeling of a brand new start.  Anything is possible.

Anything, well, that doesn’t result in a big fat failure…  That is definitely not the right direction.  Or is it?  I’ve been thinking a lot about risk and the ultimate price of failing.  What would happen if I really fail?  Well, I could lose my house.  I really like it, but I would find shelter.  In a pinch, I could make a refrigerator box cozy and quite chic!  Maybe my friends would be really disappointed in me if I failed…  Or would they?  Perhaps they would admire the determination and fortitude I mustered to take big risks.  Most people don’t ever do it.  For all of their very good reasons.  Not me.  Failure can’t contain me anymore.

The big new year and scary blank sheet of paper is about failure – and hopefully some success.  Or perhaps it would be better to describe 2012 this way.  This year is about living.  I am taking my first bold step of 2012 by removing the word ‘failure’ from my vocabulary.  I want to live without the guardrails of calling something good or bad.  Success or failure.  There is only intuition and listening, then doing what makes sense.  Reducing ADD by staying present.  Increasing creativity.

If I can just remember to make good choices that reflect me, then maybe I can’t fail?
